Mark Kleine is an Australian performance artist. He was born in Sunnybank, Queensland to parents of German and Filipino nationality and grew up in rural South East Queensland. After completing an exchange program to Japan and graduating from Hills International College in 2009, Mark completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Queensland University of Technology in 2013. He currently lives with his family in Logan City, Queensland.

Mark seeks to portray the evolution of identity through performance. By drawing on image culture, narratives from history and personal experiences in Australia and abroad, he attempts to dramatize this process through depictions of the self. This includes photographic series, live performances, videos, costumes and set designs. In this context, the artist can address themes such as authenticity, representation and fluidity while political and emotional dimensions are anticipated. In this sense, the work can provide commentary on a divisive status quo and intertwines this with an empowered sense of agency.

Mark has participated in various exhibitions, residencies and causes locally and abroad. These have included the Australian Institute of Moving Image, Art from the Margins, Amnesty International and the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art. Mark has also undertaken residencies at Metro Arts in Brisbane and Shiro Oni Studio in Japan and was recently a finalist for the Brisbane Art Prize in 2017. He is currently practicing in the Brisbane area and has aspirations for the arts concerning human rights and social justice.
